Johannes Lenzenweger lives with his partner in a converted farm on a plot of about 3,700 m² in Straßwalchen in Salzburg. On the wall of the house hang the plaques "Life raft for biodiversity" and one from "Nature in the garden". Both certificates describe well what his garden is all about. The trained fruit tree keeper cares for his fruit trees with love and, for about twenty years, also with Effective Microorganisms.
When Johannes Lenzenweger rebuilt the farmhouse 40 years ago, there was only one walnut tree in the garden. He planted all the other trees himself. Mainly apple trees, but also plum trees in between. "A former colleague at work was the chairman of the regional association for fruit and horticulture in Salzburg and encouraged me to do it. The intensive involvement with the trees also led Johannes Lenzenweger to train as an arborist. Until eight years ago, the now 62-year-old Salzburg native was in his main job at the post office.

Even as a 6-year-old, Johannes Lenzenweger had a great awareness of nature: "I remember being horrified every time a piece of green space had to give way to a road or a house. At some point we will all starve to death if more and more nature disappears, I said to my father even then." This attitude towards his environment also quickly gave rise to the Salzburg native's desire for self-sufficiency. Today he has lots of herbs in his garden and an unheated greenhouse where he grows seeds and vegetables. "At Christmas we even have radishes." Recently, a few chickens of his own have been stalking around the property, and for the past three years Johannes Lenzenweger has been allowed to call himself a beekeeper.
Johannes Lenzenweger became aware of microorganisms through his father - he was a farmer and was already one of the Multikraft partners in the 1980s. At that time he was still working with feed products for pigs, but from 1997 onwards he also worked with Effective Microorganisms. "My father swore by EM." In the beginning, however, Lenzenweger still worked with pesticides on the fruit trees: "In the evening, after spraying, I felt really physically weak, because you always get some of the poison through the wind. Since I've been working with microorganisms, I can spray bare-chested without worrying." For spraying, he combines several Multikraft products. Among others, Fermented Garlic and Chilli Extract (MK5), Terrafert Leaf, EM Active, Fermented Horsetail Extract, Fermented Nettle Extract, mOlnasa Spray Whey Powder, EM Ceramic Powder and ZeoBas Ultrafine. "It sounds a lot, but it's one spray." In spring, he says it is important to spray every 14 days to avoid fungal diseases. Otherwise, according to his expertise, there are only two things amateur gardeners could do wrong in the process: "Severely overdose and spray in the midday heat."

Visitors to his garden rave that the garden exudes an indescribable power all of its own. "Quite simply, a different milieu exists in my garden," says the arborist. "And that makes a certain vibration." He himself only notices it when he misses that certain "something" in other people's gardens. "Effective microorganisms get any system back on track." However, the tree-trimmer observes that one has to be patient for this - depending on how far the system has already gone off track. "You don't get it back on track overnight, but over a long period of time, and it's the same with the repair process: some things work in a week or two, others take six months to a year.
Erwin Meier Senior from Gartencenter Meier in Dürnten, Switzerland, is considered a plant expert. In an interview, he gives insight into the development of the family business and the importance of Effective Microorganisms and a healthy soil.
"With Urban Jungle we have achieved great success in reducing fungus gnats."
