Congratulations on the 20th anniversary of bioemsan. How did you come up with the idea of developing cosmetics based on Effective Microorganisms?

Our skin microbiome consists of millions of microorganisms. That's why a large number of beneficial microorganisms can work wonders on the skin. In Japan, cosmetics with microorganisms have been around for a very long time. My mother Ulrike Hader learnt about these products during her visits to Japan and was immediately enthusiastic about them. So in 2001, my mother decided to develop her own cosmetic products with Effective Microorganisms.

How did you come up with the name?

It wasn't difficult for us to find a suitable name. The basic idea came from my grandmother, the combination of "bio" for organic, "em" for Effective Microorganisms and "san" for sana, the Latin word for healthy, was quickly decided on and found favour in the company.

Allow us an insight into the manufacturing process: how was the probiotic bioemsan organic cosmetics developed?

The first step was to select the best herbs for the first two creams together with a herbal expert. These were fermented with the microorganisms in a long process. This is how we produce our herbal extracts today. We have also combined EM raw materials with the best organic raw materials. Finally, the first bioemsan products were launched on the market in 2003 with the balm cream and the moisturising cream.

These ingredients make bioemsan so special:

Effective microorganisms intensify the effect of the raw materials and herbs contained and have a positive effect on the skin's protective acid mantle and balance.
At the centre of all bioemsan products: EM-fermented herbs, Manju, Manju sea salt, EM ceramic powder, coral calcium.

There is now also a bioemsan toothpaste. How did this come about?

The decisive factor was my mother's meeting with dentist Dr Gerhard Schneider, who uses EM technology in his dental practice. It quickly became clear that the world needed an EM-based toothpaste. In 2004, the first bioemsan alkaline toothpaste was launched and it quickly developed into our most successful bioemsan product.

Why did the design change completely in 2008?

Because the old design made it difficult to distinguish the individual products from one another. By 2007, many new products had been added, such as cleansing milk, facial toner, lip balm, salt soap, rosemary shampoo, avocado shampoo, conditioner, hand cream, body milk, shower gel and deodorant. This called for a design that would make it clear at a glance which product it was - and so the colour worlds for the different product areas came into play. The design allows us to introduce numerous other products that fit in perfectly with the colour concept.

The bioemsan range also includes sun protection. What has been happening in this area?

The launch of the ta:yo sun series is certainly one of bioemsan's major milestones. The sun care oil is a pioneer here. After years of development, we were able to launch the first bioemsan sun cream with sun protection factor 15 in 2021. This was followed in 2023 by the launch of the new bioemsan SPF 30 sun cream.

Over the course of 20 years, experience naturally grows. How does this affect the products?

We are constantly developing and optimising. Microbiome skin research is particularly important to us, and we value tried and tested formulas according to the motto "Never change a winning team". At the same time, we strive to keep up to date and improve, for example in the areas of ingredients, fragrance blends and the use of regional ingredients. We also saw potential for development in packaging and switched from plastic to glass jars with wooden lids. Being contemporary is important to us. During the coronavirus pandemic, we relaunched our bioemsan liquid soap in 2020, which quickly became a bestseller when the topic of hand washing came into focus.

Which milestone in bioemsan's history should also definitely be mentioned?

The Bokashi Rub Oil is certainly another success story. We have been selling this "magic oil for everything" since 2021 and demand is constantly increasing.
