Getting your garden ready for spring: natural and sustainable tips to see you through the season

Spring is just around the corner, which means it's the perfect time to prepare your garden for the new season. Healthy, nutrient-rich soil is the best foundation for strong growth and a bountiful harvest. Healthy soil for robust plants

Good soil is the basis for healthy fruit and vegetables. By incorporating nutrient-rich soil into beds, raised beds and pots, plants receive optimal conditions right from the start. They take root faster, grow vigorously and produce a better yield. You can find out more about good soil in our blog.

A tried and tested tip: spread organic black earth over the entire surface of the garden bed or raised bed and work it well into the existing soil. Simply spreading it over the surface is not enough. The vegetable plants can then be planted directly.

Strong plants with bokashi

It is particularly worthwhile for heavy feeders such as fruiting vegetables or cabbage to also incorporate Bokashi into the peat-free Bio-Schwarzerde. Light feeders such as salads do not need this extra portion. You can find out how to easily and cheaply produce Bokashi here.

Prepare your garden beds perfectly

Before working the soil, it should have reached a temperature of around 8°C and dried out.

 

  1. Apply the bokashi and lightly incorporate it with a rake.
  2. Then cover with fleece to retain heat.
  3. Fresh bokashi must be incorporated into the upper layer of soil two weeks before planting.
  4. Contact with the soil accelerates the conversion into soil and neutralisation of the still acidic bokashi.

First sowings in March

From March onwards, the following vegetables can be sown in warm weather:

 

  • kohlrabi
  • parsnips
  • radishes
  • black radishes
  • early carrots
  • lettuce
  • spinach

Natural seed strengthening

High-quality soil already lays the foundation for strong plant growth. It gets even better if the seeds are pre-treated. Seed dressing ensures that the seedlings grow more robustly, develop a better root system and are less susceptible to pests and diseases.

It's so easy:

  1. Put a pinch of EM Ceramic Powder in the seed bag or in a screw-top jar with the seeds and shake well.
  2. Sow the seeds as usual.

Water newly-sown plants with a mixture of 10 ml Roots per litre of water. The microorganisms support root growth and ensure healthy plants.
