The lunar calendar: plants in harmony with the moon

The EM lunar calendar

For thousands of years, people have been using the moon and its cycles to help them identify the best time for certain activities. The lunar calendar is based on the moon’s orbit around the earth. Depending on which constellation the moon is in, it influences the growth of plants and determines when plants should be planted, sown and harvested. The EM lunar calendar is based on the experience of gardeners and farmers that has been built up over centuries and is still valid today. It recommends the best time for doing specific jobs in the garden. Using the EM lunar calendar, you will never miss the best moment to make Effective Microorganisms active (basic product).

The influence of the moon on plants and gardeners

The Multikraft EM moon and planting calendar is based on the calculations of Maria Thun (1922 - 2012) and the lunar yearbook by Johanna Paungger and Thomas Poppe. Moon gardeners work on the assumption that not only large bodies of water are influenced by the moon, but also small ones, such as plant sap. However, the position of the moon is not the only decisive factor when gardening with the moon: Depending on the constellation in which the moon is located, so-called fruit days, root days, flower days or leaf days are determined, which are favourable for gardening for certain plant groups.

In our EM moon and planting calendar, these four plant groups are labelled with the following symbols:

The yellow apple stands for fruit days
On fruit days, fruit plants, i.e. varieties whose seeds or fruits are eaten, are sown, cultivated or harvested. Pumpkins, peppers, tomatoes, peas, beans, herbs such as dill, fruit and cereals are fruit plants.

  • The brown root stands for root days
Root plants are ideally sown, cultivated or harvested for storage on these days, e.g. potatoes, carrots and herbs such as parsley root: Potatoes, carrots and herbs such as parsley root.
  • The pink flower symbolises flowering days
Leafy plants are ideally sown, tended or harvested on leafy days. This includes all vegetables whose leaves are harvested, such as salads and herbs
  • The green leaf for leaf days
Leafy plants are ideally sown, tended or harvested on leaf days. This includes all vegetables whose leaves are harvested, such as salads and herbs.
