You can design the plant lanterns to suit your taste. Try out different flowers and leaves and see which patterns you like best.

What you need:

  • Handkerchiefs
  • kitchen paper
  • Balloons
  • Craft glue
  • Flowers and leaves

And this is how it's done:

  1. Tear paper: Tear handkerchiefs and kitchen paper into small pieces. This is great fun and you can start thinking about what your lantern should look like later.
  2. Mix the paste: Prepare a small cup of paste by mixing craft glue and a little water together.
  3. Glue the balloon: Blow up the balloon and stick the pieces of kitchen paper with the paste onto it until it is covered with two layers.
  4. Add flowers and leaves: Now place the flowers and leaves on the glued balloon. Cover everything with a final layer of tissues and paste. Now let the balloon dry well.
  5. Remove the balloon: When everything is dry, let the air out of the balloon and remove it. Now you have a great lantern shape!
  6. Add light: Place a string of lights or an LED light in the lantern and it's ready.

Tip: If the papier-mâché layer loses its shape when you remove the balloon, you can simply inflate a new balloon inside to restore the shape.

Creative variants

  • Use different flowers and leaves for colourful patterns.
  • Try coloured paper or fabric scraps for extra colour.
  • Make lanterns in different sizes - small ones for the table and large ones to hang up.
